What I like about a box of assorted chocolates is this: Each one has a different filling and you don't know what you'll get until you bite into it. So it is with this collection of blogs: some about hypnosis and some about weight. In the first blog readers learn about the author's lifelong interest in hypnosis and how he became a hypnosis/NLP practitioner. Another blog offers his generic hypnosis script for "a happy heart, a peaceful mind, and a playful spirit." Don reviews two books: The Cortisol Connection by Shawn Talbott and Full-filled by Renee Stephens - both books explaining the role of stress in weight gain and behavioral approaches to weight reduction.My favorite two blogs in this collection are transcribed conversations between Don and a friend, in which the reader gets to listen in. The creative element is that each conversation takes place within a context - making the conversation seem real, sincere, and intimate. One conversation, about hypnosis, takes place while Don is eating lunch with a friend. The other conversation, about weight management, takes place while Don and a friend watch a tennis match. The reader gets a play-by-play of the match, along with excellent tips about how to maintain a healthy weight.
In the interest of transparency, I know Don and consider him a competent colleague and a darn good writer. He did not ask me to write this review, and I know he will be surprised to see it. This book portrays a hypnotherapist's study of how hypnosis and sensible behavioral guidelines can help overweight people achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Moreover, Don's warm, easy-going personality shines through every chapter, like the chocolate shell that holds all those delicious fillings!

You feel like you are sitting across the table from this author, casually having a conversation about getting in shape and losing a few extra pounds. He tells you about hypnosis, where it originated, why it is effective and the best and simplest ways in which to use it. You listen as he gives you his own background - how he became obsessed with learning more about this little known art and talent, who was instrumental in helping him on his pathway to success, what it took to become certified and how many other subjects he had to familiarize himself with to effectively help his clients lose weight and gain confidence. The author even makes it fun for readers of this book by giving them examples and instructions on using hypnosis in mind games and other related activities.
He gives readers common sense and helpful methods other than hypnosis to assist in controlling your weight such as eating slowly, not putting more on your plate than you really need, and choosing flavorful foods that you can enjoy. Pointers on holiday eating and tips on dining at restaurants and on cruise ships are also touched upon to give the reader more information on how to tackle temptation in many different and enticing situations. Pelles devotes his expertise on chapter about guided hypnosis and methods of using hypnosis to combat insomnia, pain and allergies.
Although the book is about weight loss, it could be also be useful for anyone who wishes to learn more about hypnosis and what it takes to become a hypnotherapist. He attributes much of his own success from authors and programs he researched and studied such as Wendi Friesen's DVD lessons on Advanced Integrative Hypnosis, and Dr. Shawn Talbott's book, The Corisol Connection Diet. Reading this work is like having a comfortable conversation with an old friend. I have been watching Don's career with great interest since he became a member of my hypnotherapy network. In six short years he has become a shining example of what to do if you're going to become a hypnotherapist. His credentials are exemplary, and he continues to grow as a practitioner with his new book "Hypnosis and Weight." Truth be told, this book is a compilation of articles previously written, but they are very good articles. Well written, insightful, witty, and educational, these articles will give the newbie and the experienced hypnotic practitioner a really good overview of how a hypnotherapist can effectively deal with the number one reason why anybody goes to a hypnotherapist - weight control. Good on you, Don, for putting this together.
I personally know Don. He's an excellent hypnotist. I feel grateful he shared his insights in his book. I'm sure you will, too.
The thing that I especially like is the idea that food is nothing special. You do NOT need to illogically include food into every aspect of your life. This is SUCH a terrific idea for people to understand who struggle with their weight.
Turn off the TV. Stop believing that FOOD is a part of all your thoughts, routines, relationships and life situations. Food is ONLY used to refuel the body. THAT'S it. There is NO REASON behind the excessive use of food in life for every event, especially for stuffing your feelings of fear, worry, anger, grief, etc. FOOD NEVER CHANGES ANY SITUATION TO BE MORE PLEASANT.
The thing that IMPROVES LIFE is when you THINK differently. To THINK differently, simply think different thoughts and use those thoughts instead of FOOD to improve your life.
