Michael Dunnagan was never supposed to sail on the Titanic, nor would he have survived if not for the courage of Owen Allen. Determined to carry out his promise to care for Owen’s relatives in America and his younger sister, Annie, in England, Michael works hard to strengthen the family’s New Jersey garden and landscaping business.

Annie Allen doesn’t care what Michael promised Owen. She only knows that her brother is gone―like their mother and father―and the grief is enough to swallow her whole. As Annie struggles to navigate life without Owen, Michael reaches out to her through letters. In time, as Annie begins to lay aside her anger that Michael lived when Owen did not, a tentative friendship takes root and blossoms into something neither expected. Just as Michael saves enough money to bring Annie to America, WWI erupts in Europe. When Annie’s letters mysteriously stop, Michael risks everything to fulfill his promise―and find the woman he’s grown to love―before she’s lost forever.

Cathy Gohlke truly gives God the glory in this book, by repeatedly referring to our need for Jesus Christ, and His great love for us. This book is a good Christian historical fiction novel for that reason, and for the fact that the romance is very, very subtle, and the history is well-researched. The whole book is profound and penetrating in awareness and understanding of the history of that era, and the heart of man and his important relationship to God.

The story begins with the Titanic, vividly describing the wealth, luxury, and fanfare that went along with the maiden voyage of this vessel.

In Chapter One, you meet Michael Dunnigan, a poor, abused child trying to earn money and doing his best to keep out of the way of his angry, drunken uncle. Then in Chapter Two,you briefly meet Aunt Eleanor, who will become one of the vilest creatures in the story. Her twisted hatred and manipulations of the family will shock you.

Owen is also introduced in Chapter Two, and he has a true Christ-like heart and lives a life that surely pleases the Lord Jesus. The main character, Annie Allen, is the sister of Owen, and she is briefly rescued from the clutches of Aunt Eleanor by him, in hopes of bringing her to America after he has established a gardening business.

This book has so much to offer you, I hope you read it. Like I said, it begins with the Titanic, and takes the reader on through World War One, powerfully described and unforgettable as Mrs. Gohlke vividly describes the horrors of war. You feel as if you’re on the front lines in Verdun, in Northeastern France, alongside the British Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses. The bombing by the Germans, the horrific casualties of the war, was aptly portrayed in this riveting dramatic story.

The lovely relationships and blossoming romances (all rated G) are but a glimpse into the love Mrs. Gohlke must have for her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
I don’t want to give away too much of this story, it’s deep and profound, on so many levels a truly good Christian historical fiction novel. It would be wonderful if a movie was made about this. Simply wonderful!

Thank you, Cathy Gohlke, for using the talents God gave you to write such books that educate, entertain, and make us think about OUR relationship to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, the ONLY Way into Heaven and eternal life. May God richly bless you. Please keep writing, and never give up.

Promise Me This Cathy Gohlke 9781414353074 Books Reviews

For me, the story is clearly seen in two parts the Titanic, and WWI. What went on between was a little fuzzy, but the events during the Titanic AND WWI were so amazingly interesting.

History... It seemed very sound and well-researched. I learned a lot about the Titanic and could see myself traveling aboard. I was also brought into the trials and terrors of WWI in France, England, and the hospitals.

Storyline... some people have said that the story started out slow. I thought it was a pretty good start until after Michael reached New Jersey. Then, like I mentioned, it seemed to get a little fuzzy as to why the scenes were important to the plot (it seemed more like the author had to get from one important event to the other). It was still interesting, but it seemed a little...jerky at times.

Characters... The two MCs are Annie and Michael. However, the story continually bounces back and forth between about a dozen other characters -- some are highlighted only for one scene. I understand why the author mixed omniscient with deep POV, as it gave the opportunity to follow history that was woven into the fiction, but as a general rule, I prefer deep POV.

Romance... I really like the first half of the book. ;) And yes, that was before the romance hit. It wasn't awful, but it was very emotional-driven. There were a few kisses mentioned, but more or less the romance was about the characters' emotions being driven.

Spiritual... here is where I knock a star off. The spiritual aspect of the story seemed a little inconsistent. Owen was held up as the peak of Christianity and he did present a strong Gospel message, but it was never clear to me as to whether or not Michael and Annie were actually saved. Overall, they really didn't live a life striving to please God. It was somewhat mentioned toward the beginning, a little in the middle, completely lost during WWI, and then returned in the end. I personally think that the story would have been complete without it (not to sound harsh, but it wasn't that important to the story). So yeah, the spiritual side was a little weak.

All in all, I did enjoy this read, particularly for the historical aspect.

There's something so compelling about Cathy Gohlke's writing. Her stories are beautifully crafted, and her word choices are vivid, complementing the setting and the characterization. Promise Me This is truly one of the most beautiful books I've read in years. It's a twisted tale, leading the reader through several years of European and American history and is filled with romantic notions throughout. I've always been fascinated with the story of the Titanic, so those portions of the story captured my attention right away. What really drew me in, however, was the intense characterization. I found myself rooting for Michael and Annie, my heart pounding alongside theirs as the story moved forward from 1912 through the end of WWI. Though I'm a fast reader, I deliberately took my time with this book, only letting myself read a chapter or two a day. I wanted to savor every word. And savor, I did! By the time I reached the end, I realized I'd truly read a masterpiece!

I recommend a lot of great Christian books, but I can honestly say I would give this one ten stars if I had the option. Cathy deserves every star. So do Michael and Annie, who went through a lot to finally merge their hearts!

Kudos, Cathy! Can't wait to see what other readers think of this one. I, for one, think it's brilliant!
