What if you didn't have to die to know that heaven exists?
And what if that knowledge could get you killed?

Following a biking accident on icy Boston streets, grad student Zack Kashian lapses into a coma. When he wakes up on Easter, months later, muttering the Lord's Prayer in the original Aramaic, the media is set abuzz about the "Miracle Man." Religious fanatics flock to Zack's hospital bedside, though he claims to be an atheist.

Zack's revival also catches the attention of Dr. Elizabeth Luria, who heads up a small team of neuroscientists secretly researching near-death experiences (NDE). Their objective to determine if there is anything to the claims of NDE victims about floating down tunnels into the celestial light and meeting spiritual beings. Is all that evidence of the afterlife? Or is it just neurobiology, as Sarah Wyman, one of Luria's young researchers suspects.

For personal reasons, Luria is desperate to prove the afterlife exists. So are her wealthy, evangelist backers, who can't wait to announce the greatest discovery in human history that God exists. A discovery that would at last reconcile science and religion. A discovery that would end the world's religious strife and unite all humanity.

Yet Zack's experiences are anything but heavenly. While he and Sarah struggle to understand his horrific out-of-body experiences, they have no idea that sinister forces have taken an interest in them. Forces to whom near-death experiences are utter blasphemy—deceptions by Satan himself. They enlist a menacing agent who, in the name of God, will stop at nothing to terminate the project and all involved.

Tunnel Vision edition by Gary Braver Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I usually read thrillers for exciting entertainment and don't expect to do a lot of thinking except for trying to guess twists and turns in the plot and finding factual inaccuracies.

Tunnel Vision provides a fun and exciting read while cleverly raising many questions about god, life after death, near death experiences, dreams and the paranormal. It does make you think. And it is very clever as Braver never really takes a stand on these questions but leaves it up to the reader.

What really sold it for me is it seemed very grounded in science. I get frustrated when a writer insults your intelligence with unrealistic or scientifically flawed elements - kudos to Braver for assuming his readers are intelligent.

Tunnel Vision edition by Gary Braver Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Tunnel Vision is much more a provocative mystery than it is a medical thriller, but even more thrilling for the difference. Gary Braver has never shied from approaching the moral & ethical questions of our time. His past work examines the human costs of obtaining eternal youth, or artificially enhanced intelligence and beauty. Now Tunnel Vision examines the ultimate challenge for science & religion of all time Is this all there is? Is there existence beyond this life?
Braver presents for our entertainment a conflict between spirituality & technology; between faith & fanaticism. What costs are we willing to pay for the answer? As always, we're warned to be careful what we wish for.
As he unravels the mystery through the twists & turns of the multifaceted plot line to reveal the reality, the reader is left w/ the theme & the conflict to ponder long after the last page has been turned. Enjoy the ride.
Tunnel Vision is a gripping thriller that makes you think. If you have ever wondered about near death experiences, out of body experiences, the after life, soul, spirituality, etc., this is the novel to read. Right from the beginning, Braver draws you in and hooks you.

The protagonist is a college student who bangs his head in a biking accident. While in a coma, he awakens briefly to speak the Lord's prayer in aramaic, a language he certainly doesn't know. When he awakens for good, he has no recollection of this, but knows his life has changed. In carelfully orchestrated moves by the author, the student later finds himself participating in "sleep" studies, conducted by local doctors and scientists. We soon learn that these medical people have other ideas than sleep in mind, as do some religious fanatics who believe Satan is at work.

This is a thriller that makes you consider possibilities. You may end up questioning your own beliefs. As usual, Braver keeps the pace moving and the action hot. You will enjoy this novel.
The author navigates a tricky path in a novel story-line describing the depths of depravity to which some will plunge to by their actions, simply because they've disassociated themselves from reality in the search for illusive truth that exits only in their minds! Gary manages to cleverly thread through various hypothesis from science about the "tunnel of light." For those (as myself) who have published about our own experiences "beyond" the tunnel of light the possibilities are interesting to the point of life-changing yet as scientists we remain still objective about the causations. In my view, this book provides a great capture of human interactions as the characters follow their roles driven by their "blindly followed beliefs" - and to be certain history is replete with examples of the consequences - and it displays what happens for other characters with both closed and open minds. Well done![...]
Okay, so I read literary works recommended by fellow English teachers, but this one wasn't. And, I am not a sci-fi or thriller type. In fact, I prefer creative nonfiction because of the scientific, historical or biographical nature of the genre. However, my husband recommended that I read Tunnel Vision when he finished it.
Wow! This is one page turner and beautifully written. It is not often that the main character in a fictional work draws me in through his experiences as Zach does, and the science in this puppy is amazing. Braver has done his homework on near-death experiences big time, and he's also created lifelike characters in his portrayal of religious leaders; they are not stick figure stereotypes. As another reviewer stated, Braver does not take a stand on the religious implications but clearly presents issues for readers to ponder long after they have finished the book.
The plot keeps readers on the edge of their seats, often surprised at the turns it takes, and doesn't include a love story but rather a developing friendship that is leaning clearly towards a long-term relationship. Again, Braver is non-judgmental in working through issues of NDE and religion in a well-crafted book spun by a master.
