Before the personal computer, before the microchip and even before the fragrant expanses of prune orchards, there was the Santa Clara Valley. After the Americans took control from Mexico, immigrants began to arrive in droves, quickly turning the humble pueblos into a multicultural society by necessity. In "We May Choose", the hardy descendents of four diverse families find their way to San Jose from far-flung points on the globe, where they mingle with established Californios struggling to preserve their lands and lifestyle. Over the next five decades their linked life stories are, by turns, refreshing and heartbreaking, violent and lifeaffirming, productive and painful. Collectively, the old families and the new lay the foundation for astounding growth in the century to follow.

We May Choose A Novel of California Santa Clara Valley Don A Dugdale 9781593308162 Books Reviews
"We May Choose" paints a large canvas with meticulously detailed characters whose lives become increasingly real with each successive chapter. Finely researched and imaginatively conceived, Dugdale's work makes the reader impatient for subsequent volumes. A great read for history buffs, historical novel adherents, admirers of adventurous characters, California-dreamers, mystery lovers, romantics; in short, anyone who enjoys a fine novel.
A delicious fast-read, rich in detail about the Santa Clara Valley's early settlement days. The novel gives you a full flavor of the hardships, opportunities and early decisions that helped shape what is now our Silicon Valley. While some of the characters are fictional, Dugdale's impeccable research on the history of the area brought to life other real-life characters and events that definitively left their mark in the history of the valley. His writing style is detailed yet fast-paced and interesting, and the genealogy chart at the beginning of the book makes it easy to keep track of who's who as the novel progresses. I am very much looking forward to the sequel series!
What a wonderful compelling book, I will see these past-life characters magically as I walk the
streets downtown here in San Jose as reminders of our areas growth, struggle ,and beauty

If you like historical fiction and California history, "We May Choose" will be right your alley. Author Don Dugdale creates several generations of characters whose families develop complex relationships through joint businesses, marriages and feuds over a fifty-year period. He does a fine job of interweaving his characters’ stories with those of real historical figures and with events that actually occurred. While San Jose, California is at the center of the action, the main characters are Californios, American East Coasters, Europeans and Chinese.
At points, mostly early on, the pace of this self-published debut novel slowed a bit for my taste. It got a little wordy; some of the dialogue sounded a little too modern; there were too many details about, for example, how many pounds of flour, lard, bacon, beans, coffee, etc. the Foards took on their cross-country wagon trip.
But an interesting thing began to happen. The more I read, the more I was rooting for these characters. I wanted to find out what became of them. Getting the reader to care about the characters is key to writing a good novel, and Dugdale succeeds very nicely. With the meticulous attention he put into historical accuracy, it’s clear he himself cares a good deal about his characters and their stories.
The writing gets stronger as the story develops. For me, Part 3 is Dugdale writing at his best. The pace also picks up as the story and the relationships become more complicated. Things build to a nicely executed final scene with some last surprises. I hope we’ll see a second Dugdale novel sometime in the next years.
Don Dugdale brings the history of Santa Clara Valley to life. He makes learning about the Valley, and the diverse people who settled there, fun and interesting.
It's a real page-turner. If you like historical novels, you'll love this. The author has entwined interesting fictional characters and intriguing stories with real historical facts, characters and incidents. I highly recommend this fascinating story.
"We May Choose" is a very good Historical Novel that keeps you interested from the first page. Dugdale has done his research well and built a story of the many people who came to California, and the results of their input to make the state that it became. I think every California library should carry a copy.
