I hope no Poincare fans are going to rage on me for saying this but, humbly, it's not deep. But that is ok!If you're looking for a textbook of formulae, this isn't it. I generally knew that going in and that is the reason I bought it, but I did expect just a tad more "Math." Instead, it is a discussion and pondering of mathematics or rather a pondering of general mental questions by a Mathematician. It's almost light reading and I think just about ANYONE can read it.
I heard of it when it was mentioned in a mass-market math edutainment "documentary" and figured for the cheap price of the Kindle version what the heck. The price fits it.
If you do go with the Kindle version, be prepared in that it appears to have been a totally automated rip of the book. There are many mistakes in the OCR and lots of words that are broken oddly no matter what size you set your reader to. That said, none of these were huge problems for me and, for the price, they shouldn't be for you. It just means that occasionally you have to take a second to figure out the word that the Amazon computers messed up, and that ends up being a good thing sometimes because it forces you to read for extra comprehension. I found it to be like a quiz and made a game out of it!
I think if this book's content were being put out today, it would be the author's blog rather than a book that a publisher would invest in. I am not trying to be a snob, I know that I am not all that smart and this was light reading even for me. Not that it isn't interesting, but none of it was earth shattering (perhaps it was in it's original day).
I did like the part about how coffee kept him away from his dreams one night and he presented that he got the power of his dreaming self while awake. He didn't go far into this, just described it, but as a reader I took a break at that point and considered the possible ramifications.
What does that story have to do with math? I think that it is the crux of this book... it's not about "Math" so much as an exploration of how the brain works as explored by a person who has a deep love for the art and science of Math.
Killed some time, good impulse buy. If you're looking for train-ride reading that is better for your brain than the paper or a magazine then you won't be sorry.
